Open Angle Glaucoma

Glaucoma consists of numerous conditions that damage the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. However, with early detection and treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss.

Medical studies show that eye pressure is a major risk factor for optic nerve damage. The anterior chamber is the space in front of the eye where a clear fluid flows in and out of the chamber and nourishes nearby tissues. The fluid drains from the chamber through a spongy meshwork, like a drain.

In open-angle glaucoma, even though the drainage angle is "open", the fluid drainage through the meshwork is too slow, causing the eye pressure to rise and damaging the optic nerve. When the optic nerve is damaged, vision loss may result. Controlling the pressure inside the eye is important in saving vision. There are several types of glaucomas.
